Friday, January 18, took place in Wengen the super combined race, with a downhill and a slalom run.
Despite the snowfall of the previous day, the track and the weather were magnificent, as well as the consistency of snow.
While from FIS rules the departure of the downhill of the combined should be the same as that of the real downhill, in the case of Wengen makes an exception, because the length of almost 4.5 km would be excessive for slalomists.
Wins, making the void behind him, Alexis Pinturault with a spectacular slalom run, attacked from the first to the last gate with the suppleness and speed that characterizes him. Of course the performance of the French stands out because it fell between many downhillers that between the rapid gates have a harder time, and it would have been very interesting to compare it with an Hirscher’s run.
Not bad also the downhill run, where he ends twenty-second.
Second, by a second and fifteen hundreds, is Ivica Kostelic after a small interned at the beginning of the slalom, he shows his class, while remaining a gear in less than Pinturault.
A second and forty-nine from the French, back on the podium after two years, is Carlo Janka, who makes a very good downhill run completed by the fourth time and then defendes well in slalom, to containing the gap.
Fourth, by just three hundredths off the podium, there is the Austrian champion Benni Raich, who, while not having the speed of a while ago, gives, as always, a lesson in style.
Christof Innerhofer is fifth, thanks to the better downhill run, playing to perfection the tracking of this classic and then knowing how to manage well in the slalom, a discipline in which he trained really very little.
Sixth is instead Dominik Paris, twelfth at the end of the descent, who makes a good test of slalom, earning several places.
Tenth instead Siegmar Klotz, and Peter Fill is seventeenth.
A curious thing was thatthe ski of three athletes came off during the slalom: Matteo Marsaglia, Ted Ligety, who was making a run to the podium, and Kjetil Jansrud’s attack has opened and then they obviously had to stop.
The excitement of this weekend continues with today downhill and with the slalom and the super-g on Sunday, in Wengen for the guys and in Cortina for the women.
